Prepare the marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together miso paste, mirin, sake, sugar, soy sauce, and grated ginger until smooth.
Marinate the cod: Place the cod fillets in a shallow dish and coat them evenly with the miso marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.
Preheat the broiler: Set your oven to broil and position the rack about 6 inches below the heating element. Line a baking sheet with foil.
Prepare for cooking: Remove the cod from the marinade, gently wiping off excess (but leaving a thin layer). Place on the prepared baking sheet.
Broil the cod: Broil for about 8-10 minutes, until the surface is caramelized and the fish flakes easily with a fork. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
